7 Months & No Shampoo – My No Poo Adventure

Yes you did read that right I didn’t wash my hair with shampoo for 7 months! I was on a no poo adventure and unfortunately it has now come to an end. It just couldn’t get it to work for me; not for want of trying though, I just couldn’t get it to work for my hair.

It got to the point where I was just wearing my hair up all the time because it never looked quite right down.

No Poo

It just looked a bit limp and a little bit too greasy. It also wouldn’t curl properly. I really, really wanted it too work and I stuck with it for 7 months hoping that it would eventually get better but it never did. The only positive to it was that my hair grew a lot quicker.

What I Used

To start with I was using a combination of bicarbonate and water to wash my hair and then I used a cider vinegar rinse afterwards. I then dropped the bicarbonate and just I opted for an egg wash with a cider rinse. The first time I washed my hair with just the egg it was amazing afterwards. Really fluffy, clean and even curly, however after the initial wash the next one didn’t have the same effect. My hair was limp, heavy and greasy.

I found the bicarbonate made my head itchy and stripped all of the dye off my hair. The only thing that seemed to work was the cider vinegar.

I even tried using white henna  or Cassia Obovata whatever you want to call it. This was interesting! It was very hard to apply but afterwards my hair did look quite healthy. It’s just not a viable option for frequent hair washing. I also thought that it may lighten my hair too as I had stopped dying it with my normal chemical filled dye. It didn’t!

Timeline of My No Poo Adventure

I have put together a timeline of photos for you to show the different stages of my ‘no poo’ adventure.

So I caved and I washed it with toxin filled, nasty shampoo and it smelt heavenly!

No Poo

Immediately after the first was it felt and smelt better than it had done in months. It also had more volume and curled really well. I don’t want to discourage others from giving it a go though as they have been many other people that have gone ‘no poo’ and it has really worked for them. I just couldn’t get it to work with my hair type. This is not to say that I won’t give it another go at some point in the future though.

7 Months and no shampoo - My no poo adventure

Check out this great book, packed with information on going no poo by the lovely Lucy AitkenRead from the blog Lulastic and the Hippyshake. Unlike my experience, Lucy’s was much more positive and she has managed to achieve No Poo.

  1. I would be a complete greaseball if I didn’t wash my hair for even two days. Your hair looks amazing even after a few days!

    1. I think it helps if your hair is curly, it takes quite a few days before my hair looks greasy. I didn’t feel like it felt amazing but thank you for saying so 🙂

  2. I have to say, it looked really good. Not something I could do though…I only wash my hair once a week as it is very long but I am always glad to get that clean feel..
I use Aveda products so also no nasties involved.

Thanks so much for linking up with the #mondayclub

  3. I actually think your hair looked healthier and shinier in your no poo photos. You still look great after, but definatley healthier and less frizzy before going back to shampoo.

    1. It’s been interesting since going back to shampoo my hair hasn’t got any better so I’m now wondering if there is something wrong with my hair, not sure what though. Since going back to shampoo it is still looking greasy and dirty even straight after I wash it but my scalp is really dry and itchy! It’s a bit of a nightmare really.

  4. Beautiful hair 🙂 Might be that you could try washing with conditioner only? I hear lots of curly haired girls love it.

I’m trying out no poo myself, and is in week 4… Greasy mess… Looks nice for two days after my baking soda wash, and then not so good until my next wash… Hoping it will be better soon… I give it a few more weeks, and if it doesn’t improve, I will go back to shampoo.. I’m thinking as you were thinking, no fun to wear hair up all the time! But I’m still hanging in there 😉
