People always seem to have a perception that they can’t afford to decorate. There always seems to be something else that they should be spending their money on whether it be swimming lessons for the kids or new tyres for the car. Today I’m going to try and dispel the myth that home decorating costs you a small fortune and show you a few thrifty tips to get the look you want for less.

Shop Around
The first and most important tip when it comes to thrifty home decorating is to shop around. You will already have a theme in mind so now it’s just a case of finding the products you want for the best prices.
The price of products for the home can vary dramatically from store to store so with a bit of careful research before you click buy you can drastically reduce the amount you pay for items. Some of the best discount home stores that I know of are places like Home Bargains and B&M.
Buy Second Hand
There are a plethora of second-hand bargains out there just waiting for you to give them a new home. Every day it seems another second-hand furniture store pops up on our high streets. We live in a throwaway world and you’d be amazed at what people get rid of these days. I’ve found items that are virtually brand new and the person has got rid of them.

Upcycle
Before you go out and buy all new furniture why not take a look around your home at what you already have? Is there an old wooden chest of drawers that with a lick of paint and some new fancy knobs would fit the job nicely?

Online Inspiration
If you are stuck for design inspiration before you rush out to spend your hard earned cash on those expensive glossy home decorating magazines take a look online. There are a wealth of home improvement sites out there that can inspire you and all for free.
Get Products For Free
Did you know that there are websites out there where people give away their unwanted good for free? In the past, we have got beds, bikes and even a compost bin all for free. It’s definitely worth having a nosey on these sites before you commit to buying anything elsewhere. The best sites that I have come across are Freecycle, Freegle, Gumtree and Preloved.

Buy Second-Hand Paint
You can use sites such as Community Repaint to buy second-hand paint. There isn’t anything wrong with the paint; it is simple just reusable leftover paint. The aim of the company is to reduce paint waste and they sell the paint at discounted prices to families, communities and charities in need.
we are currently giving our rooms mini makeovers and love Pinterest for idea inspiration. While Ebay, Gumtree, Wilko and Freegle have all led to little purchases. We just have to make doors now for our diy dresser.
Hi Helena, I am totally addicted to Pinterest! I have to limit my time on there otherwise I lose whole days 😉
