Last weekend we were lucky enough to be invited along to Le Bistrot Pierre in Torquay to review their new children’s menu. We have never been to one before and we were excited to discover somewhere new to eat. The timing was perfect as it was the other half’s birthday so we turned it into a family affair and took along his parents too.
Bistrot Pierre
Bistrot Pierre is a restaurant chain that specialises in French cuisine (incase you hadn’t already guessed from the name). They currently have 15 restaurants in the following locations…Bath, Birmingham, Cardiff, Derby, Harrogate, Ilkley, Leamington Spa, Leicester, Newport, Nottingham, Plymouth, Sheffield, Stockton Heath, Stratford-Upon-Avon and Torquay. We are very lucky to have two here in Devon!
First Impressions
The site in Torquay is part of the new Abbey Sands development situated right on the seafront. It comprises of luxury apartments above and a selection of glass fronted restaurants below.
When we first walked through the door we were greeted with a smile by one of the staff who showed us to our table. The place was already quite full which gave us confidence in the place from the outset. The first thing I notice about the place was the decor, it was really quirky but modern at the same time. It had a vintage industrial feel to it which I know is very popular at the moment.
The Children’s Menu
The main purpose for our visit was to test their new children’s menu so I shall focus on that to start with. The children’s menus came in little paper bags, much to the kiddies delight, which also had a box of colouring pencils in it. The menu itself was in a booklet that had a number of different activities including colouring, fill in the blank games and word searches. The booklets were a great touch and kept the kiddies entertained throughout the duration of the meal. Grandad particularly enjoyed the fill in the blanks story where he was inserting rude words which the kids thought was great!
There was a nice selection to choose from including roasted chicken breast, tarte flambee, macaroni cheese and croque monsieur. It costs £6.50 which included a main, a dessert and a drink. Our son opted for the macaroni cheese and our daughter had the burger. Both meals came with cherry tomatoes, cucumber sticks and french fries.
For dessert both of the children chose the Coupe Framboise which consisted of raspberry & cream ice cream with raspberries, crushed meringue, marshmallows and raspberry coulis. We didn’t hear any complaints from either of them and they both ate everything on their plates.
The other half made a good point that it may have been nice to of had a few starter options on the kids menu for slightly older children or children with larger appetites although for our two it was fine. There were lots of other families eating in there so it’s obviously a very child friendly place to eat. They even had an area filled with pushchairs.
For the Adults
For the adults we ordered off of the main lunch menu. It was fantastic value for money; One course was £8.95, two courses was £10.95 and three courses was £12.95. Immediately this put us in a good mood as one of our pet peeves when eating out is food that is priced too high.
Starters
For my starter I chose the Parfait au foie de volaille – Chicken liver parfait with sourdough toast and red onion confiture. It came nicely presented on an engraved chopping board.
The other half opted for the Salade au Roquefort – Salad of Heritage tomatoes, basil, Roquefort and shallot dressing.
Mains
For my main I had the Filet de saumon – Seared peppered fillet of salmon with wilted spinach and béarnaise sauce. It came with potatoes and a mixture of vegetables.
The other half had the Le rôti du dimanche – A traditional Sunday Roast served with all the trimmings and a choice of 2 meats, which is only available on Sundays.
Desserts
For pudding I had the Tarte aux chocolat et praline – Chocolate and praline tart with caramel ice cream. It was very tasty!
The other half had the Crème brûlée.
I still can’t quite get over the fact that we had all that food and only paid £12.95 for the 3 courses and not just that the food was excellent. I generally couldn’t fault anything that was presented in front of us.
The Decor
Being a bit of an interior design nut I couldn’t really review this restaurant without at least touching on the decor. It was very impressive and is exactly how I would like to do my own house! Literally everywhere I looked there was something that I wanted to take a photo of.
In Summary
- The staff were very efficient and attentive
- The food was cooked to perfection
- Lovely choice of food for the children
- The decor was very modern but also inviting
- Very child friendly
- Great value for money!
Here’s a little video of our experience…
Oh goodness this all looks so lovely and has made me so hungry 🙂 It’s good that they give the kids something to keep them busy as little one’s never really sit for long.
#TriedTested
It was very lovely. We are so happy that we have found somewhere local that not only serves great food but is also very child friendly. Definitely going back soon.
