This years Zero Waste Week theme was Reuse. It got me thinking about what reusable products we could start using instead of throwing away in our household. One thing that really annoys me every month is the amount of waste my period produces, that and the cost of it! I have a heavy flow so I seem to get through a lot of pads each month. I’d never even considered reusable sanitary products before. When we had sex ed at school reusables weren’t presented as an option so I didn’t even know about them, which when you think about it is kind of mad considering reusable nappies are very common. So for my Zero Waste Week pledge I decided to look into switching.
Why I Want To Switch?
The 3 main reasons why I want to make the switch to reusables are…
- Save Money
- Reduce my waste
- Health benefits
I have already written a post on the money saving aspect of switching which you can read here.
Where to Start?
I started to do a bit of research and discovered that there is a massive amount of options out there and lots of companies that supply them. My problem was where to start! There are cloth pads, wool pads, pads with PUL, pads without PUL, organic pads, patterned pads, light pads, heavy pads! It can all be a bit overwhelming for a beginner.
Here are just a few of the sites that I have found so far that sell reusable pads…
Honour Your Flow
Earthwise Girls
Moon Times
Eco Dreams
Cheeky Wipes
The Pie Patch
In the end I opted for a night pad from Honour Your Flow and an Earthwise small and medium pad. I didn’t want to get any more than this as I wasn’t sure how I would get on with them so thought I’d do a test run first. My reviews on each of these products will follow shortly.
I’m excited about my adventure into muff fluff (love that term!). More post to follow soon with updates. I’d love to hear from anyone that already uses reusable pads. If you’d like to learn more about switching then visit Eco Fluffy Mama‘s site where she has all sorts of information that you will find useful as well as discounts and giveaways on all sorts of products.
More posts on switching to reusables…
I’m really interested to hear how you get on with these. I use a menstrual cup which seems like a lot less hassle than using reusable pads as there is no washing to do. I have thought about trying pads as well though as they could come in useful at times, so I will be looking out for your next post on them with interest!
Hello! Thanks for mentioning The Pie Patch & welcome to the world of cloth pads! They are SO comfy I’m sure you’ll never want to go back to disposables.
I don’t actually sell cloth pads but I am a fellow blogger & have been using & writing about cloth pads for two years. There is loads of helpful info on there about finding the right pad for you, troubleshooting common pad problems, reviews, washing, etc. & I’m more than happy to help if you need any guidance. Lookig forward to reading your follow-up post to see how you got on! 🙂
